KTA was engaged by our client to assess a roadside stone retaining wall that had partially collapsed, with additional visible cracks threatening the stability of the structure. The condition of the wall led to the local highways authority closing the road for safety concerns.
Our team carried out an initial visual inspection of the wall and recommended further investigations to better understand the underlying issues. Detailed site assessments revealed extremely unstable ground conditions, which posed a significant challenge for the existing retaining walls.
To address the instability, the upper and lower retaining walls were largely dismantled and rebuilt. Our solution involved installing strength rods that were tied back into large reinforced concrete anchor blocks, which were cast deep into the ground at the far side of the site. This approach ensured the long-term stability and safety of the structure, allowing the road to be safely reopened.
