We were appointed by the client to assess the damage following a fire that severely impacted their admin and facilities building, destroying the roof and leaving structural elements unstable. The fire brigade’s efforts to extinguish the fire, combined with the lack of a roof, had left the first floor in a potentially dangerous condition.
Our team promptly visited the site to conduct an initial external inspection, identifying areas of immediate risk. We then carried out a detailed internal survey to assess the condition of the first floor, roof, and external walls.
The fire damage to the roof framing and the subsequent collapse had caused the first-floor walls to be pushed outward, making them unsuitable for reuse. Based on our findings, the final design involved dismantling the external walls down to the first floor and rebuilding with a new timber-framed roof.
From a safety perspective, we were unable to confirm the building's structural stability, which posed a risk to any operatives entering to clear fire debris from the first floor. We recommended that the building be carefully dismantled down to ground level using heavy machinery to prevent any further collapse of the roof or walls.
